Valentine's Day (traditions)

Think of five or six names of boys or girls you might marry, as you twist the stem of an apple, recite the names until the stem comes off. You will marry the person whose name you were saying when the stem fell off.

Pick a dandelion that has gone to seed. Take a deep breath and blow the seeds into the wind. Count the seeds that remain on the stem. That is the number of children you will have.

If you cut an apple in half and count how many seeds are inside, you will also know how many children you will have.

American Culture Pag

Family Tradition

We teach our children about American Culture. We teach them to be good Americans by sharing our traditions of Citizenship, American Holiday Celebration, Craftsmanship, Entrepreneurship, Competition, Leadership, Know-How, and Positive Attitude.

Our Culture

Beyond the walls of our home lies a great Nation with a culture of its own. The structure of our Government, our laws and the way people relate to each other have great influence on our actions and attitudes. What do you think about when you hear the words: The United States of America? On our Freedom Page we display the quote "The land of the free, and the home of the brave". Many of us think of that quote, or quotes from the song: "America The Beautiful", like "spacious skies" or "amber waves of grain".

"Only in America"

There is a culture in this country whether spoken or unspoken that manifests itself in everything we say, do, or think. For example, in the United States we expect to compete in every aspect of our lives. At the same time we expect to compete, we also expect to be given equal opportunity to grow to our potential. We believe we all have equal rights under the law. We expect American Industry to put out a quality product and for our Nation to be a leader in the world. Sometimes we even find ourselves "on the soap box" spouting expectations of our Nation's performance or the performance of American Industry not realizing that unless we each live up to these expectations, our Nation and our Industries cannot. Frequently, many of our competing interests and our strong desire to ensure Individual Freedom, result in extraordinary events taking place that can only be explained by the expression: "Only in America".

Pass on our culture to future generations

Whatever our "National" culture may be, many of us depend on our schools and institutions to teach our children. Should we leave this precious part of our children's education just to schools and other institutions? Emphasis and example at home are very important to the development of our children so that our Nation remains strong into the future. What Customs and Traditions do you observe in your family so that you pass on the important aspects of our American Culture essential to our future survival? What kinds of conversations do you have with your children?

This Web page links to Customs, Traditions and Rituals practiced by American Families. They are listed at right; click on the desired Tradition to view. Our Family and Freedom Web Pages have additional Traditions. If you would like to share with us a Custom, Tradition or Ritual that you find important, please visit our Traditions page.

English in my life and the life of my family

Kate, 14.
I live in Kiev.
Kiev is the capital of Ukraine.
Kiev is a city which has great weather and fantastic history.
A lot of tourists come here on holiday, but I live here! Ukrainian is the official language in Kiev.
It's the language we use when we read and write at school, but we speak 'Russian' at home and with friends.
This sounds very different to Ukrainian.
In fact, it's almost a different language!
Also in school we study English.
I have been studying English since 2004.
I like to study English!
And now we work with new technologies.
This is very interesting for me!
What about me?
I usually listen to music in my free time.
Music is really important to Kiev.
My favorite band is 'Muse'.
I've got all their CDs.
I like singing songs, and I'd love to be a rock singer, too.
Also I'm like drawing.
It's very interesting for me!

Is it good or bad to use the Internet?

I think that Internet helps us in our life.
First of all, the Internet helps us find a lot of information easily.
I can read a book on the Internet.
At school some people give us homework.
And I can easily find all what i want.
We can listen to music and watch different films.
I love watching horror movies. And my favorite singer Frank Sinatra he sings New York.
I listen to his songs every day. Also on the Internet I can visit my own blog. I like English sites because I can find a lot of information.
However I think some people become less more aggressive. All day they stay at home and don't live own life. In my opinion the Internet has more advantages. And our life has become better with it.

ZARA-my favorite shop where I can buy new clothes=)

Zara is the flagship chain store of Inditex Group owned by Spanish company tycoon Amancio Ortega, who also owns brands such as Massimo Dutti, Pull and Bear, Oysho, Uterqüe, Stradivarius and Bershka. The group is headquartered in A Coruña, Galicia, Spain, where the first Zara store opened in 1975. It is claimed that Zara needs just two weeks[1] to develop a new product and get it to stores, compared with a six-month industry average, and launches around 10,000 new designs each year. Zara has resisted the industry-wide trend towards transferring fast fashion production to low-cost countries. Perhaps its most unusual strategy was its policy of zero advertising; the company preferred to invest a percentage of revenues in opening new stores instead.

Zara was described by Louis Vuitton fashion director Daniel Piette as "possibly the most innovative and devastating retailer in the world." Zara has also been described as a "Spanish success story" by CNN.

Company history
The founder of Zara, Amancio Ortega, opened the first Zara store in 1977 in a central street in A Coruña, Spain.[3]

Its first store featured low-priced lookalike products of popular, higher-end clothing fashions. The store proved to be a success, and Ortega started opening more Zara stores in Spain. During the 1980s, Ortega started changing the design, manufacturing and distribution process to reduce lead times and react to new trends in a quicker way, in what he called "instant fashions". The company based its improvements in the use of information technologies and using groups of designers instead of individuals.[4]

In 1980, the company started its international expansion through Porto, Portugal. In 1989 they entered the United States and in 1990 France.

This international expansion was increased in the 1990s, with Mexico (1992), Greece (1993), Belgium and Sweden (1994), etc. until the current presence in over 73 countries.

Zara stores are company-owned, except where local legislation forbids foreigner-owned businesses. In those cases, Zara franchises the stores.

Zara's products

As of 2007 Zara stores have men's clothing and women's clothing, each of these subdivided in Lower Garment, Upper Garment, Shoes, Cosmetics and Complements, as well as children's clothing (Zara Kids). Currently their sizing on women's clothing goes to a US size 12 or a UK size 14 or extra large.[5

Manufacturing and distribution

Zara is a vertically integrated retailer. Unlike similar apparel retailers, Zara controls most of the steps on the supply-chain: It designs, produces, and distributes itself[6].

Regarding the design strategy, an article in Businessworld magazine[7] describes it as follows: "Zara was a fashion imitator. It focused its attention on understanding the fashion items that its customers wanted and then delivering them, rather than on promoting predicted season's trends via fashion shows and similar channels of influence, which the fashion industry traditionally used."

50% of the products Zara sells are manufactured in Spain, 26% in the rest of Europe, and 24% in Asian and African countries and the rest of the world.[8] So while some competitors outsource all production to Asia, Zara makes its most fashionable items -- half of all its merchandise -- at a dozen company-owned factories in Spain and Portugal, particularly in Galicia and northern Portugal where labour is somewhat cheaper than in most of Western Europe. Clothes with a longer shelf life, such as basic T-shirts, are outsourced to low-cost suppliers, mainly in Asia and Turkey.[9]

Zara can offer considerably more products than similar companies. It produces about 11,000 distinct items annually compared with 2,000 to 4,000 items for its key competitors. The company can design a new product and have finished goods in its stores in four to five weeks; it can modify existing items in as little as two weeks. Shortening the product life cycle means greater success in meeting consumer preferences.[10] If a design doesn't sell well within a week, it is withdrawn from shops, further orders are canceled and a new design is pursued. Zara has a range of basic designs that are carried over from year to year, but some fashion forward designs can stay on the shelves less than four weeks, which encourages Zara fans to make repeat visits. An average high-street store in Spain expects customers to visit three times a year. That goes up to 17 times for Zara.[11]

On Sept 6 2010 Financial Times reported that Inditex has launched the first online boutique for its best-selling brand Zara. The long-awaited website will begin in Spain, the UK, Portugal, Italy, Germany and France – six countries that are among the most important of the company’s 76 markets. When asked about the company’s late arrival to internet retailing, Pablo Isla, chief executive, said they have been waiting for online demand to build before launching into cyberspace. All items on sale at its Zara outlets would be available online and at the same prices. Customers can choose from the usual range of paying methods and opt either for a free store pick-up or paid-for postal delivery. The online return and exchange policy is identical to the store system, with shoppers given 30 days to change their minds. Queries will be handled by customer service operators or via e-mail or chat messaging. Inditex said that iPhone and iPad applications that allowed purchasing would soon be available.[12]

Zara Online will extend the service to Austria, Ireland, the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg in the second half. Online stores will begin operating in the US, South Korea, and Canada next year (2011).[13]

Patricia Kaas

Biography

Patricia Kaas has been called the new Edith Piaf and the French Madonna. She has toured Europe, Russia, and Japan, and has sold millions of albums outside of her native France. "She is a chanteuse in the most complete sense of the term," wrote Ester Laushway in Europe, "a cat-eyed, fragile figure whose husky voice belongs in dark, smoky cabarets…." Kaas specializes in updating the French chanson style, a tradition that combines pop, blues, and jazz. "Her real claim to fame, though," wrote Brendan Kelly in the Montreal Gazette, "is the fact that she happens to possess what is arguably the sexiest voice in the entire pop universe and the hottest set of stage moves this side of mid-'60s Mick Jagger."
Kaas was born on December 5, 1966, in Forbach, France, a steel mining region near the German border. Her father was a French coalminer and her mother, who had emigrated from Germany, promoted her daughter's career in show business. "Papa wanted me to be happy and my mother was my first fan," Kaas told Charles Bremner in the London Times. "She never forced me but she used to say, 'You have to fight to make it.'" Kaas learned songs by Claude François and Dalida, and by the age of eight, she began performing publicly. "Each time there was a singing contest, I would go there," Kaas told Music & Media. "For me, it was a real pleasure. I even had a band at the age of nine."
At age 13 Kaas began performing at the Rumpelkammer ("Fun Room") in Saarbrucken, Germany. She traveled across the border each weekend, becoming a performer-in-residence, singing the songs of Liza Minelli, Sylvie Vartan, and Joni Mitchell. "The German beer tents were the best school," she told Philip Sweeney in the Independent, "they were all drunk, you really learn how to handle an audience." At age 17 Kaas entered a song contest and won a trip to Monaco, allowing her to see the beach for the first time in her life. Two years later, she was spotted by Bernard Schwartz, an architect who was involved in the music industry. "When I first saw this skinny little girl," Schwartz told Bremner, "I said to myself it isn't possible that it was her singing like that." He helped Kaas make her first demo tape and introduced her to industry professionals.
In 1985 Kaas attended record company auditions; at one such tryout she met actor Gerard Depardieu. He became interested in her career and agreed to finance her first single, "Jalouse." The song, however, failed to catch on, and Depardieu discontinued his sponsorship. Between this false start and coping with an illness her mother suffered from, Kaas's career stalled until 1987, when songwriter Didier Barvelivien gave her a piece titled "Mandemoiselle Chante le Blues." "People were telling me," she said to Music & Media, "'it's not commercial enough.' But I fought for it, did what was necessary, called radio stations, tried to get people interested." Her hard work paid off when the single started selling, seven months after its initial release.
In 1989 Kaas was named Revelation of the Year at the Victoires de la Musique Awards in France, and in 1990, she released Scène de Vie, her debut album. Good sales and radio play quickly transformed Kaas into a pop star. Scène de Vie went platinum in France, Belgium, and Switzerland, reached the top 20 on German radio, and remained on the German radio charts for 44 weeks. "You always hope for success," Kaas told Music & Media, "but, you know, I wasn't really getting the full meaning of sales figures…. I knew something was happening, but I was just speeding along." In 1990 Kaas signed with CBS/Sony in an effort to launch an international career.
After the release of Scène de Vie, Kaas departed on a world tour, performing before thousands of fans in several countries. In 1991 she was awarded the Bambi Award in Germany, and in 1992 she sold out eight American shows. "We really felt it was important for people especially the media to see her live," Cyril Prieur told Music & Media. "As we couldn't invite all of them to France, we found it more convenient to go over there." After the release of Je Te dis Vous, an album that sold 2.5 million copies in 1993, Kaas toured once again, traveling through 13 countries.
In 1993 and 1994 Kaas toured 19 countries and performed 145 concerts. She became the first French performer to travel to Hanoi since the end of the Vietnam War. She also traveled to Russia for eight shows, including a benefit concert in the Ukraine for victims of the Chernobyl nuclear accident. Kaas admitted that one concert wouldn't change the fate of the thousands who lived in the quarantined town of Slavutich, but she told Catherine Cote of Agence France-Presse, "it is already a good thing to be there and tell people that we are thinking of them." In the mid- to late 1990s, Kaas continued to release albums while working hard to enter the British and American markets. Speaking of Britain, she told Bremner, "I like fighting in a country which is completely closed to French music. It's good to have the feeling that you have to keep starting from the beginning and trying to convince people that French music exists."
In 2002 Kaas broadened her career by starring with Jeremy Irons in the film And Now Ladies and Gentlemen. "While shooting, I realized I have many different aspects that I did not think of," she told Han Hyeon-woo of the Korean newspaper Chosun IIbo online. "If allowed, I'd love to do more films." She also released Piano Bar, featuring English versions of French songs. "When I sing in a different language, it takes the songs out of that traditional context, it liberates them," she told Rupert Smith of the Guardian. With an English movie and a tour to support her new album, Kaas's presence on the international stage has continued to grow. When asked by Music & Media what she had accomplished during the first ten years of her career, Kaas responded: "Well, it looks as if we have covered quite some ground, haven't we? And there's no reason to stop at this stage."
